Operating Three Phase Oil Well Motors from Single Phase Current

A RONK Econo-Phase being used to operate oil well motors

Reducing electric pumping startup costs on smaller wells can be achieved significantly by using a static phase shifter.

The ECONO-PHASE® Shifter, Type PS-OF, is specifically designed for low-speed/high-slip three phase electric motors used on oil field pump jacks. This innovative solution allows these motors to be operated from existing single phase power lines, thereby eliminating the need for expensive construction to bring three phase power to the site.

Single phase oil well motors are limited in size and availability, and they tend to be more expensive both initially and in operation. ECONO-PHASE makes it possible to utilize standard three phase oil well motors, which are available in ratings that single phase motors cannot match.

While other phase conversion systems are available, none are specifically designed for low-speed/high-slip oil well motors like the ECONO-PHASE Shifter, Type PS-OF. This unit incorporates heavy-duty components tailored to meet the rigorous demands of oil field operations, including surging loads and the ability to operate continuously, if required.

Special capacitors are included to handle the high peak voltages that can occur when the motor runs overspeed during the downstroke and acts as a generator.

ECONO-PHASE Shifter operates all standard three phase motors with a normal connection—eliminating the need for "opening up" the motor to make special connections.

The Type PS-OF converter is available in both 240-volt and 480-volt versions and is housed in a NEMA 3R aluminum enclosure for outdoor mounting.

ECONO-PHASE Shifter, Type PS-OF is available in sizes ranging from 3 HP to 75 HP.

For applications such as saltwater injection pumps, submersible water pumps, and gas compressors, the ADD-A-PHASE® static phase converter is the preferred solution. ADD-A-PHASE units are available in a variety of voltages, supporting up to 125 HP.
